How can I get my dauther enrolled in preschool?
I’m in a suburb of Detroit, MI. Does anyone know if there is a way around this ridiculous rule? Is there a way to get her tested into Preschool? I’ve heard of kids sometimes getting double promoted, how does that happen? I’m not attempting to get her promoted way past her capabilities, but preschool would be nice. Board of Ed is not helpful, “That’s the rule, been that way for 45 years” is all I hear from them.

There are other types of ‘pre-schools’ designed specially for children who are advanced. They aren’t labeled as pre-schools though, they’re basically just classes for advanced children and alot of parents start their children in these before pre-school. It is a bit costy, but being in Detroit, I’m sure you can find one to your budget and liking. On the other hand, you may not have to send her to one of those at all, becuase she will still have to start in pre-school next year as the other children, however, once they see that she’s too advanced (and from the scores you mentioned I’m sure she is), they will skip her a grade and she will be where she is suppose to be.
I know, I know, it’s odd that they won’t accept her early, but they’ll skip her a grade once she starts, but that is just the messed up rules of the education system.
Don’t worry, when she does start pre-school, make sure to talk to her teachers (after a few weeks) and make them aware that you think she’s not being challenged, and request they evaluate her. More than likely they will feel like you do.
Are there not preschools that accept children younger in your area? here it is common for 2 and 3 year olds to attend preschool.
As a teacher, I have experience (first grade) that many students with birthdays later in the year (Jan-June) really struggle the second half of the year. Although usually not academically….but maturity. You child may be an exception (there are always several). I would just wait it out. It doesn’t seem there is much you can do. Keep working with your child at home. it sounds like you are doing well with her!
