Me on the other hand wanted to venture up the hills to the tallest mountain and take our chances finding a little hideaway to stay in. I wanted to experience some new adventures.
Well it was the day of deciding and Shelly was standing firm on her decision and so was I. “Look “ she finally said, “Either you are with me or you are not because if you aren’t than remember THIS DOOR SWINGS BOTH WAYS and you can go on your own.”
That was all I needed. I grabbed a few BITS AND PIECES and was off. Now, I’m not very big, but I felt like the KING OF THE ROAD as I headed for the hills.
It was still light when I reached this place where a huge mountain lay ahead. I was going to have to take my time if I was to reach the top. I glanced at the hills near the bottom and as I raised my eyes upwards they looked as if they were joining one another somehow.
“This isn’t going to be so bad after all.” I thought to myself. I was here for a whole week so what more did I want?
My first night wasn’t too bad. I even found a little hole of a place to lie down in for a rest.
The next morning was gorgeous out. I couldn’t wait to start. I ate a few berries that were around me and off I went again.
The hills were steeper than I thought they were going to be and a lot more dangerous. Not being as sharp as I thought I was I fell into a hole. That gave me a nice sore leg but still determined I hobbled along until heard this rumbling sound. “Better find myself some shelter soon.” I thought.
I came across this little cave and settled in for the night. Fortunately it was warm and plenty of food around the cave, which was good because I’m a wee bit lazy in that department and I didn’t bring much.
“Oh gee, what was that noise?” I’m not the bravest either which I don’t like admitting.
“It was probably bats.” I thought, “after all I am in a cave.”
A few minutes later another sound crept in. “Ah gee, this is not going to be a good night. I wonder what Shelly is doing? I’ll keep thinking about Shelly and maybe that will help me stay calm.”
It started raining and a big clash of thunder let go. Lightening lit the cave entrance. I listened to the THUNDER ON THE MOUNTAIN above me. It wasn’t normal somehow.
It gave out low rumbling sounds, stopped, started, and then gave different tones altogether.
O.K. now I was scared. If Shelly only knew she’d be saying, “You aren’t so smart and sly now are you?”
“Oh well, she didn’t have to know. I’ll get through this somehow.” I thought
I slinked a little further into the cave, but froze in my tracks as I felt this STRANGE APPARITION.
“Did you see or feel that?” I said to no one. “Oh my gosh, who am I talking to? I’m that spooked I’m talking to myself but I know I felt something touch me. I got to somehow pull myself together.
I was so frightened I hadn’t noticed the rain had stopped and the moon was brighter than I had ever seen before.
“Morning or not I’m leaving.” I said to myself.
I took off down the hill, stumbling a few times, and turning to see if anything was following me such as a lynx or something because I didn’t want to be eaten on top of everything else.
I don’t know how and I didn’t realize how far I’d gone but just before my eyes was our little home. I burst through the door yelling, “HONEY I’M HOME!”
Shelly stood there as I babbled about my night and a half away from her.
“Will you slow down? You are only giving me BITS AND PIECES and you’re making no sense.”
“It doesn’t matter Hun. I’m home, you were right, and I’m never going on vacation without you again”
“Now you think this is the end of my story, don’t you? Well, as far as my adventure it is but all you people out there thought Sally and me were human too. Didn’t you? Well you are all wrong. We aren’t. We’re foxes and yes we have little families, trips, and tiffs too. We’re known to be smart and sly, but I wasn’t, as you read. I was however, big and smart enough to admit I was wrong and hope you all do the same thing if you know you’ve gone astray. Now that goes both ways of course. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!”

I thought that my yelling woke me up, but to my surprise, I looked up and there stood 5.)Thunder on the Mountain.
I could not believe my eyes!
I could only remember 3.) bits and pieces, of the goings on that had occured earlier.
I began walking towards the mountain, the closer I got, the faster I walked. It was dark, but the full moon lighted the road quite nicely. I began to run, looking up towards the mountain yelling Thunder! Thunder! when all at once It felt as if I’d hit a door. I fell on my rear. I stood up and began brushing myself off when 4.)King of the road appeared.
2.) This door swings both ways missy! he shouted. I whispered, I can see that, Your Hineyless, but what has this got to do with me. I am trying to catch up to Thunder.
The King became uncontrollable and started shaking me, shouting 6.) Honey I’m Home! I opened my eyes and there stood….my ex. This was no dream, this was a 1.)strange apparition if I had ever seen one.
As I’d driven out of the town of Rusty Spring, there had been thunder on the mountain, the mountain that shades the town from the afternoon sun. I don’t know if that was a good omen or bad.
I mean, sometimes you choose a path, and your future is set. Marriage. It’s not a “this door swings both ways” situation. I pictured a strange apparition of a future me, opening the door of a small picket-fenced bungalow, and greeting my future wife with “Honey, I’m home!”
Then I saw it, the ring, seeming to call and beckon to me with its twinkling. The main stone was a flawless diamond, three carats, princess cut. Flanking it were alternating smaller zircon, moissanite, and colorless artificial beryl — cleverly cut and set so that their fire was focused into the bigger diamond. I’d never seen anything like it before or since. The diamond’s color appeared to change with every slight movement.
I don’t remember buying the ring, and I don’t remember the drive back to Rusty Spring. It seemed like only a heartbeat… a heartbeat pounding with trepidation… before I was down on one knee, almost dropping the box opening it, and stammering.
“W-w-w-will y-y-you t-t-tame buttercups w-with me?”
“6. HONEY I’M HOME!!”
Damn! Husband, dinner, WHAT?! Huh! Bathrobe, slippers?! ACK, run, run.
BAM! Slap goes the door, right on my nose.
“Oh, honey – how many times do I have to remind you? 2. This Door Swings Both Ways! You need to watch it. Geez, look, now you’re bleeding all over my good suit!”

They had argued before he left on his last trip about that stallion of hers and about the fact that he was on the road all the time.
That horse sure lived up to his name “Thunder On The Mountain”. He thought the stallion was dangerous, but the real problem was that she spent more time with the horse than she did with him.
They had both said things they didn’t mean. She telling him he acted like the “King Of The Road “, gone all the time in that truck of his. Him accusing her of loving that horse more than she did him. It was the worst argument they had ever had.
When she told him that she was going to leave he had said “Well ya know honey this door swings both ways”. He knew they were going too far with all the nasty things they said to each other, but he couldn’t seem to stop himself.
The thing was he loved her more than anything on this earth. He hated the thought of sitting in an office all day, but if that is what it would take to keep her he was willing to do it or anything else she asked.
He had called her on the road, and called and called. She never answered the phone. He left dozens of messages telling her how much he loved her, asking her to forgive him. He told her he would quit going out on the road and start running the office again like he did when they were first married. After all he owned the trucking company and he could choose to do anything he wanted. It was just that he hated office work.
As he walked into the kitchen he realized that she must have still been there because there were bits and pieces of her breakfast left on the kitchen table. At least he hoped that it was from this morning and not left from before. God please let her still be here he prayed.
He went out the back door and out to the barn to see if she was there. No wife and no horse. He knew then that she had really left him. Why, why did he have to say all those mean things to her. Now she was gone and he thought he would never get her back. As he turned to go back to the house, head down, out of the corner of his eye he saw a strange apparition. He realized then it was not strange, but her riding up to him on her horse with a big smile on her face.
She jumped off the horse and ran to him throwing herself into his arms crying and telling him over and over how much she loved him and how sorry she was.
He couldn’t believe his eyes. It turned out she had gone to her Mothers house while he was gone and hadn’t gotten his messages till this morning.
It’s OK honey she said. We will work things out. I’ll start going out on the road with you. I know how you hate the office. I’ll sell the horse. You are more important to me than anything else.
He told her he didn’t want her to sell the horse. He knew then they could work it out so they could have all that they wanted and have each other too. He vowed to himself that they would never argue like that again.
As they walked arm and arm into the the house he thought to himself, all is right with the world. He was so happy.
Now “lets get to the bedroom” he said. She smiled up at him with a gleam in her eye!!!! Your wish is my command, “Lets go!!!!”
