A phrase is a set of words that does not make a sentence, like (a). It has no verb.

A main clause has a subject & verb & makes sense by itself, like none of the examples. An example would be: “We ate ice cream.”

A subordinate clause is like (b) and (c). They have subjects, (the store and the clock), and verbs (opened and struck), but they need a main clause like “we ate ice cream” , to make sense.

So, the three would all be good sentences with a good main clause added:

We ate ice cream, slipping into the icy water…

We ate ice cream since the store opened…

We ate ice cream when the clock…

all there are subordinate clauses. They cannot exist by themselves!!
