Can you help me understand the usage of parallel structure?

Hi, I’ve got some problems in deciding when to use commas and parallel structure. For example:

John wanted to be an engineer, firefighter, or policeman.

John wanted to be a engineer, a firefighter, or a policeman.

Which one of these is right and why? I wrote both of those out, so they could actually be both wrong.

The second one is correct. ( an engineer) Parallelism is a pretty big topic, so I suggest you go to the following site which gives excellent English grammar info. This link should take you straight to parallelism.

It’s great that you are thinking carefully about your writing style.
