You can try the “plug and Chug” method. Just start using any number for x and then adjust the number you use based on what answers you get. This takes time and is unreliable. For a better strategy, you must factor each expression before you can graph the answers:

1. expression factors to (x+5) (x-2) [this means that when you multiply these two factors together, you get the original expression].

Now, any number for x that makes both of the factors positive, or both of the factors negative, will multiply together to make the original expression greater than zero(positive).

To keep both factors positive, you can use 2 and any number greater than 2 (x =>2).

To keep both factors negative, you can use -5 and any number less than -5 (-5<=x). So -5 => x => 2 is your answer. You can draw the number line yourself, just draw a line and make sure that the labels include -5 up to 2. Then shade the part of the line below -5 and above 2 (including -5 and 2).

The second question is done the same way. The factors would be (x-1) (x-4).

Hope this helps.
