Has anyone tried those jobs teaching English in another country?

I’m interested, but skeptic – especially with all these places claiming to hook you up if you just pay them thousands of dollars to get you “certified”. Anyone know first hand?

Good question. I’ve taught ESL in several countries. It’s a good life, but you have to be cautious about taking a job. Don’t take the first offer you get. There are lots of scams.

Your best bet is to go to one of the websites for ESL teachers (see below), look over the information in the forums, and ask lots of questions. Also, read articles written by experienced teachers. And it helps a lot to narrow down where you want to teach.

Yes, Brasil. If you have a good education, and it would help to be an English major, you can go to some really far out places and they will pay you just to teach students to speak English. My brother went to Siberia and was never hungry, taught himself to teach it. Couldn’t hurt to have the certificate though, wouldn’t cost you ‘thousands’ to get in Europe. If you’re a real cheap skate, go to the country you want, having done a little research, and take a local tutors’ test at any of their commercial English schools for free. Then you know the questions and second/third time you can get hired after finding out the required answers, like what is a phrasal verb, some countries questions are really esoteric and set by poor teachers.

Hi there,

I tried it 19 years ago and it’s changed my life. I have been teaching in Thailand all that time, now I have a family here and my own school now!

It sounds like you’re thinking of applying through an agency. There are risks with agents and even applying directly to a language school. If you have a look at the many web sites that advertise English teaching jobs around the world, such as Dave’s ESL Cafe, you can probably make up your own mind about any risks with individual schools. Read between the lines!

Good luck,

Simon J

No, go to a legitimate school and get your TESL certificate, and find a job on your own.
