Does it matter where you go to undergrad school?

My guidance counselor was saying it matters more where you go to grad school-if I have a …..common major and it’s offered just about anywhere, would it matter where I went to college?

Your guidance counselor is correct. Don’t worry about your undergrad college too much. I mean, if you can get into an ivy league institution, then that would look amazing and you should go for it. But, if you’re contemplating between a state school and local private school, it’s not going to make much of a difference which one you study Psychology or English at.

One thing you need to keep in mind though is that you really need to keep your grades up if you want to apply to grad school. What you study as an undergrad and grad student don’t necessarily have to relate, but if you’re not getting good grades you won’t get accepted to a good school. Grad schools are much more competitive than undergrad colleges.

To some extent. If you go to grad school, that’s the most important school. But some grad schools won’t really consider you if you didn’t go to a prestigious undergrad school.

I had a friend who sat on the admission committee at Harvard a few years ago for their grad program. She said they threw away all the applications that didn’t come from Harvard, CalTech, or Berkeley. Even after we had paid the $90 application fee.

Going to a college with a strong reputation can make a big difference when you are applying for jobs down the road.

Some firms, such as the top investment banks and consulting companies, recruit from a small list of top name schools. If you think that investment banking or consulting are fields that interest you, you might be smart to consider going to a school on their target lists. That said, if you are looking to get into a less competitive field, your college might not make as big of a difference.

Going to a good grad school is important, but remember that you have to get into the grad school first. Grad schools take into consideration the difficulty of your uindergraduate program. If you decide on an easier or lesser known undergraduate program, you will have to make sure that your academic performance really stands out to gain acceptance into a top level graduate program.

Just my 2 cents.

specific, it concerns. a three.7 gpa from X state u won’t have the comparable weight as a three.7 from an ivy league college. additionally important in something that hobbies you. pre-regulation scholars with a political technology degree are a dime a dozen. in case you do happen to have a three.9 gpa and a a hundred seventy five+ on the LSAT, then it won’t count the place you went as lots on account which you may have proved which you will annoying it out everywhere. yet once you’re no longer the suitable or close to-suited applicant, then it ought to be what makes or breaks you.
