Do you agree with Ludwig von Mises that compulsory education is incompatible with lasting peace?

Here’s the quote from the greatest economist of the 20th century;

“Continued adherence to a policy of compulsory education is utterly incompatible with efforts to establish lasting peace.”

Mises was an economist who debunked Socialism by proving that it cannot manage economic calculation unless the planners are Gods. He predicted the Great Depression and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1920s. He also proved that what is called a mixed-market economy is inferior to a laissez-faire Capitalist economy.

Was he also right about compulsory education policies?

I think separation of schools and state is even more important than separation of church and state. Schools teach kids how and/or what to think. That’s well and good if parents pick the curriculum for their own kids. But when the government tells people what to think, that destroys a whole lot more than just peace.

I remember thinking that the cumpulsory football rallies in high school were training kids to cheer mindlessly for the “home team” in future senseless wars. I was right.

I think you might be taking the meaning of what he said a little bit out of context.

I might be wrong, but I think he is talking about the expense of compulsory education.

You see, many families, from what I’ve read did the equivalent of home schooling before the compulsory education laws were passed in the USA. {1860’s ?}

Our property taxes in the USA are a direct result of compulsory education, and yet many property owners don’t have school age children. It’s also been prov en that home schooled children score on an average higher than publicly educated kids.

The point is, taking money from one group and giving it freely to another group for any reason, is against Mr. Misis principles, concerning money.

Thank you.
