Teacher salaries and most school funding are based on property tax. The more money that comes in from local property tax, the richer the school system. That’s why schools in the ghetto are poorly funded and schools in rich suburbs have a lot of money and resources.

Therefore, it doesn’t really matter whether you have a democrat or republican in office in your local gov. What matters is whether or not the people in your voting district are willing to pay higher property taxes or not.

There is an exception. Well-known problem areas in the inner city (e.g., South central L.A.) do get a big chunk of money from the federal gov’t through programs like title I. The democratic party, who believe in gov’t provided serivces, has been working to expand more on programs like Title I. Republicans, who are more for less gov’t involvement and more tax cuts, are looking to cut down on these programs. They would rather privatize through charter schools.

As a middle school teacher for the last 13 years I have not seen any change in the raises I get if a democrat (Clinton) is president or a republican (Bush). I have made a steady 1% – 3% pay increase each year.

Only if Ted Kennedy is able to rewrite NCLB or the next president is committed to properly funding NCLB.

When I first heard of NCLB, it was explained to me this way. The government required testing, which the students must pass to progress, the school would be held accountable, in return schools would get federal funding for training, raises, materials, and buildings.

Um, where did all that promised money go? I ‘m thinking several thousand miles east, but I might be wrong.

who knows maybe they will abolish the department of education. you could then keep more of your tax money. salaries are paid on a local scale no real federal gov’t involvement.
