Generally speaking, yes. Since the number of professors in any given department is not that large, and because they interact both professionally and socially, it is more than likely that they know each other quite well.

If you’re speaking of full-time tenure-track faculty at a bricks & mortar residential college or university, chances are they know their fellow professors in their department quite well. On the other hand, part-time temporary instructors (and especially those at online schools, but also those at bricks & mortar evening colleges, to some extent) are generally less likely to know their fellow professors.

I would say yes, but it really depends on the size of your school. If you are at a larger university (say 15,000 students) and are taking an English class, your prof. might not know everyone in the English department. This is because some professors are adjunct (meaning part-time), some are assistant professors, some are associate professors, and some are professors (meaning full-time and tenured).

Malon–you bet–they either hang out playing at golf course club house (19th hole) or going to the bars and gittin hammered. Stu drove them to drink??? That way the girl stu who want to get “A”s can meet the professor and discuss everything in depth…
