College degrees to help kids?

I would love to work with kids but I don’t know what all types of degrees that deal with working with them. As of right now I really don’t know what age group I want to work with. I would like to help them with things that deal with every aspect of their lives. I’ve been involved with children ministry, teacher aid and I really loved it. What types of degree(s) can I get to help me in order to help our young people?

There are lots of options for you. Some of the careers that will allow you to specialize in children and their needs that I can think of right now are education (including special education), speech language-pathology, audiology, social and human services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, art therapy, doctor of pediatrics and psychology.

Here’s a good way to start looking for careers and how to get started in them. Click on the first link. It’s a google search for careers – working with children.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=careers+-+work+with+children

Then start researching each career. A good place to start is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ occupational handbook. You’ll find good information on training, qualifications, work environments, job growth, salary, etc. Here’s the link:

Also, when you’re applying for colleges, or if you’re currently a college student, find out what resources your university offers that will help you = career center where you can further discuss your career goals and find opportunities in your area, internships, etc. Good luck. -:)

edit: For some other ideas for jobs with children while pursuing your college degree or for anyone reading this with your same interests but who doesn’t have a degree, this link might offer something:

* I just came across this:

http://biz.yahoo.com/special/job06_article1.html

It’s an artilce from U.S. News and World Reports – “Best Jobs To Have In 2006”, and it includes four of the careers I mentioned in the first paragraph. I thought you might find it helpful.

Sounds like becoming a child social worker would be your best bet. I’m including a web site that explains the type of careers that are available, salary and degrees needed. Hope this helps you. My daughter and I look through this so she can decide what she wants to go to school for. Good luck! The main website is http://www.acinet.org/ —- but I’ve included the one for school social worker below…….

You can study education and become a teacher. Social work is another option. Seminary school…you’re options vary. You need to figure out where your strengths are and what you want to do exactly. Sit down with a college counselor and discuss possible careers. They will be able to guide you in what you should study. In the mean time, start taking your gen ed classes. You have time to figure out what you want to do. Best of luck.
