Chances at Notre Dame, Northwestern, etc….?

I wanted to know what my chances were for schools like Notre Dame, Northwestern and even some of the ivy leagues. I am a minority (immigrant parents) and a 1320 SAT (hoping to raise it up). My gpa is about the same but of course each school looks at it differently. I have done a lot of community service and two different sports for two years with other clubs and a few other extracurriculars. Also I believe I will write a good essay.

I think you have a shot at the schools you mentioned but a lot depends on what your class rank is because 3.9 really varies. If you are top 5% or so I think you have a pretty good shot, below top 10% and all of these schools become a reach.

ND has become much more selective over the last few years and I do not think many people here realize it. When I applied in 2003 the acceptance rate was 34%, now it is 23% and dropping every year with an average SAT of almost 1400. Being a minority will certainly help, but so will raising your SAT score! Trust me when I say that it isn’t you, colleges are just crazy to get into nowadays.

If you want, come over and check out College Confidential, they have many good message boards with current students and parents who can help you with your specific schools. The ND board is at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49. Good luck!

I’d say you have a shot at some of these schools, although you aren’t a sure thing for any of them (Notre Dame yes, Northwestern maybe, ivies – some maybe, some no). You’ve done great, but so have a lot of other people, and being a minority may have some impact, but not an awful lot these days.

One of the things Notre Dame looks for is “street smarts” or common sense. Things like being able to list your question in the right section on Yahoo Answers, which apparently you haven’t figured out.

Your academic score look very good. I believe you should have no problem with most of the schools you mentioned. To give yourself higher chance, try to apply to school that promote opportunites for minorities (e.g., women in engineering), so it depends on what major you are going to pursue.

what do you mean your gpa is the same…what’s it the same as?

also, did you include writing in your sat calculation or just critical reading and math?
