Careers in obstetrics in UK?

I’m currently a highschool junior in the US, and I’m interested in becoming an OB/GYN in the UK. I want to know what I need to do to be qualified to do this. Do I need to go to medical school in the UK? If I go to medical school in the US, how hard will it be to get qualified in the UK? How does one get certified in OB/GYN in the UK? If I go to med school in the UK, what courses should I take now? What med schools are worth checking out in the UK?

Information from anyone who has immigrated from the US to the UK and is working as a doctor would be very appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It shouldn’t be too difficult to qualify in the US first then come to the UK and practice. Medicine is an undergraduate course in the UK rather than a postgraduate course like it is in the US. However it is 5 or 6 years long with the first three years being pre-clinical and the final three years being the clinical stage when you can choose to specialise a bit into OB/GY.

Things to take into account:

1. Fees will be at the overseas student rate so expect to pay over $20000 -$25000 a year for the three pre clinical years and over $40000 a year for the three clinical stage years.

2. Overseas, i.e non EU, places are restricted for medicine making competition even more competitive for you.

3. UK students taking A-levels will have specialised earlier than US students and will have learned more in the 3 or 4 subjects they have chosen for their A-levels (what you take in the UK as a school leaver qualification to get into University). You may want to take APs to make up for this. AP chemistry and if you want AP biology.

4. There are health requirements, eg. Hepatits vaccination.

5. You’ll need to take the BMAT for many medical schools. www.bmat.org.uk

6 Most medical schools will ask for an interview.

You apply via www.ucas.com which is the Univesity and College Admission Service. The site offers some useful information about the process. I also suggest you look at individual university websites. note that Oxford and Cambridge will also require you to send off an additional form.

MD is a typical clinical measure and if you entire your MD you do your specialised coaching in OB / GYN. MS is a technology measure and it is going to no longer teach you to be an OB / GYN. Since you’re posting is from the UK, I am speculating it can be further schooling for OB / GYNs who’ve accomplished their clinical measure.
