From my experience, not so much.

The only reason it seems that way is because people with similar interests will always have more to talk about and bond with than people with nothing in common. This is why a lot of people who dress similar to each other will sit with each other and become friends. However, just because people have things in common does not mean they have to dress the same, and just because people dress the same does not mean they have things in common.

In my school, no one is popular. It’s so big that no one really pays attention to anyone but their group of friends. There are the girls that are prom queen, or participate in ASB, but it’s not like it means that much as far as popularity is concerned. Certainly not as much as in movies.

“Emo” or scene kids can sit with punk kids or even the cheerleaders. I certainly don’t dress “normal”, but my boyfriend of two years just looks like an every day California teenager. People don’t really pay too much attention to the way others dress when they hit high school, although most people will spend more time getting to know someone they dress similarly too rather than a random kid.

Also, there aren’t designated bullies. You may find you don’t hit it off with a certain person for some reason, and then there will be conflict, even physical fights. But there’s not that ONE kid that kicks everyone’s ***.

It’s more so an exaggeration of the truth. Yeah the lunch tables are split. However, a prep wont die if they talk to an emo kid. No the most popular girl in school isn’t always a whore, and the nerds aren’t always smart.

Movies are fantasy, even the ones about high school.

Well yeah kinda. Its not the school’s fault. It’s the kids. Its harmless. Goth kids will sit with the goth kids, Rich kids will sit with the rich kids, and so on.

You just sit with your friends, and their friends… It’s not like everyone’s hostile or anything.
