In some cases they are, and in some they are not. Cultural differences cause many foreign students and observers to believe American students tend to have less deference to professors than is found in other countries. For example, many East Asian and Southern Asian students are used to sitting through lectures with very little questioning by students: They approach the professors outside of class or attempt to find the answers through rereading of the texts, while it is conventional in the United States to ask questions as they arise during lectures. I couldn’t say either practice indicates a difference in discipline, but it is easy to see how it could appear so.

An area which might suggest a difference in discipline is the relatively low representation of native-born Americans in graduate study of many of the hard sciences in American universities. I believe it is indicative of higher levels of discipline in foreign school systems, but there might be other factors I’m not considering, so it’s not something I feel confident in claiming.

Human nature, self discipline , and personal boundaries??

The question is much to general to be answered accurately.

I would say not as much as we would like, there are to many social “grey area’s” and people have a real fear of standing up and saying “this is right, and this is wrong”.

I would say since both parents, and society ;re-enforced by the media, pop culture and schools have indulged young people too much, they often sail the waters without a moral compass, leading to a lack of self discipline, but as they grow, and mature many snap out of it and get real; unfortunately some people are content, and choose to stay in lala land.

It all boils down to people making CHOICES.
