Have your son contact the colleges that he is interested in, and ask to speak to someone in financial aid (hey, it’s HIS education, he should take the lead in figuring how to pay for it). A lot of schools have a surprisingly large amount of money set aside for students who have limited financial resources, but good grades. he could qualify for grants, loans, outright scholarships from the school.

The fafsa is definitely the number one place to look. Depending on the college they might have other financial aid programs through the school.

Also, I’m not sure if he is in high school still or not, but often high schools have good ideas about different scholarships he might be eligible for. I know public high schools where I live offer what’s called an A+ program which will pay for all or part of college.

Once you get a loan, I would recommend trying to make payments while your son is still in school. The nice thing about paying part of the loan while in school is that if you cannot pay for some reason, then nothing happens. It will give you some cushion and less interest. Make sure you pay off unsubsidized loans first.

Start out with the Fafsa (I think the url is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) and see where you stand after applying there.

I think once you fill out the Fafsa, if it’s like at my college, if you are eligible for pell, work study, or student loans from the government, they will send your son an award letter and allow him to accept or decline what is offered.
