Any advice for someone who will be taking the GRE soon?

I will be taking the GRE at the beginning of August. I bought a review book and have been doing a lot of practice math problems as well as going through the vocab with flash cards. I am the worst standardize test taker and didn’t do so great with the SAT. What can i do to imporve my chances of scoring well enough so that i only take it once. Has anyone took it recently and can give me some hints as to what to watch out for? Has anyone took the subject tests? are they easier than the general? i do well with science but not these stupid test, go figure.

If you are not a good standardized test taker, you may want to look into taking a prep course. Yes, there is an expense involved. However, if you’re looking to dramatically improve your score and you typically don’t perform well on standardized tests, a comprehensive prep course is going to help you achieve your goals better than strictly reading books alone.

If a prep course isn’t workable for you, the next best thing is practice, practice, practice. Make sure you’re using official released GRE questions/tests too – only the real thing is going to help you prepare for test day, not questions someone wrote to “sound like” GRE questions.

And make sure that the practice tests you take are timed. Time management is a key component of successful performance on the test – if you’re not getting through the sections in enough time while practicing, you still have time to adjust your approach. Once test day rolls around, if you can’t finish a section, it will cost you valuable points!

Several other informed people and I answered this question several times in the last week or so, so a quick search on “GRE” would serve you well. As for your other questions:

the subject tests are not easier. They are probably harder, and at least different. They test real knowledge more than test-taking ability, and require a working knowledge of all aspects of the field. You only take the subject test that is required for your program–which I guess is some kind of “science”.

I would advise you against retaining the impression that science is the sole measure of intellect. You seem to think that because you know science, you should be a wiz at things like math, writing, and vocabulary because science is just oh-so-much harder. It’s all a matter of personal aptitude. You will probably do very poorly on the GRE if you think it is beneath you or “stupid”. It is an unforgiving test. And the subject test, even in science, will probably be a humbling experience for you as well.
