1. It contains 18 quarters and an unknown number of dimes = $4.50.

2. It contains a combined 18 (quarters + dimes) = cannot be determined.

3. It contains 18 quarters and 18 dimes = $4.50.

None of the preceding answers is correct, or can be correct given the information posted in the question.

EDIT: In any case, you may have misposted this in the Trivia section; shouldn’t this be in Homework Help?

EDIT 2: I don’t understand the thumbs-down? What’s up with that? In any case, Mitchell’s answer is nonsense and does not come close to explaining that there’s insufficient information provided. The problem cannot be solved.

Since there are 18 coins, and whatever is not a quarter must be a dime:

Let q = # of quarters …therefore 25q = value of quarters

Let 18-q = # of dimes.. therefore 10(18-q) = value of dimes

25q + 10(18-q)

25q + 180 -10q

15q + 180

I don’t think you’ve been specific enough. 18 of each, 18 all together, or 18 quarters, and some dimes. Sorry, can’t answer it propperly until you make an edit… or am I being too logical and missing the point?

actually in terms of quarters… if the total is $6.30 then that equals 25.2 quarters. ($6.30/0.25=q)
