what does the saying “that’s like comparing apples to oranges” mean?

If you were to say which is redder, or which is more popular, you might be able to come up with an answer, but comparing apples and oranges shouldn’t be done unless you have some sort of criteria to compare them with,
Take people Jane and Bob
To ask which is better at sports is like comparing apples to oranges because although Bob is better at baseball, Jane is a much better Tennis player – apples and oranges
You can compare 2 oranges to each other (yummy…my orange is juicier than yours is.)
But its impossible to compare apples to oranges because they are two different and individual pieces of fruit. You can’t compare two things so unlike each other. They’re INCOMPARABLE.
Does that help? LOL
