do you think a TI-83 is sufficient for pre-calc and beyond?

because i want a graphing calculator i can also use on tests…

also, why would someone choose the TI-84 over the TI-83?

thank you

The TI-84 is a little better than the TI-83. It does things like draw graphs faster than the TI-83. It also has more memory. But the TI-83 and and the TI-84 are comparable. I think the TI-83 is not out on the market anymore, so people have to buy the TI-84 now.

If you are thinking of buying a new calculator, buy the TI-84 (and go for the silver edition, if possible). But if you are just going to keep using your TI-83, that is fine as well.

A TI-83/TI-84 should get you all the way through courses like calculus and introductory statistics. However, if you go beyond that, you might have to start using more sophisticated calculators like the TI-89. TI-84 or TI-83 is probably the best one to buy at for you because I’m pretty sure that teachers will be teaching you how to use either of these two in class (and by the way, all the functions on the two calculators are the same, so if you can use one, you can use the other without learning how).

TI-83 is the standard calculator for most schools and entire math departments usually prefer the same one. Don’t get a TI-89 or 92 because you can’t use it on the ACT. I learned that the hard way. TI-84 is not much different, just has a few better functions and a slightly better viewing screen.

I bought a TI-83 plus graphing calculator for Algebra 2 in 10th grade(in 1999), it lasted me all the way through 4 years of college and through Calculus (2005).

I think the TI-84 is only for those intending on majoring in Science or math in college. For high school TI 83 graphing is plenty of power.

84 fixes some minor graphing glitches, but other than that it is essentially the same calculator. You will be fine with a 83.

Yeah. Get a TI-89.

TI-89 is GREAT for Calculus. It does integrals and derivitives. Not only that, but it has pretty print that makes things really easy to read. Highly recommended.
