Anyone who has read the Great Gatsby?

i’m doing an assingnment on the great gatsby. one of the questions about chapter 4 goes “What is significant in Jordan’s remark that Daisy’s voice has an amorous tinge?” I’ve read the chapter several times but could not find anything in the chapter about this. could someone please tell if where it is or if it is in the chapter at all?

What does “amorous tinge” mean? That’s the first thing you need to know. The following definitions are courtesy of www.dictionary.com.

amourous:

1. inclined or disposed to love, esp. sexual love

2. showing or expressing love

3. of or pertaining to love

4. being in love; enamored

tinge:

1. to impart a trace or slight degree of some color to; tint

2. to impart a slight taste or smell to

3. a slight degree of coloration

4. a slight admixture, as of some qualifying property or characteristic or trace; smattering

So, in the part that the question is referring to, Jordan remarks that Daisy’s voice has a tint of sexual love to it. That means Jordan thinks she has a sensual and seductive voice.

Well, think about it. Daisy is the ultimate goal of Gatsby. She is his one and only love. That’s what’s significant. When Jordan says that Daisy’s love has a sensual tint to it, she is hinting at Daisy’s sexuality and her sensual nature.

That’s the best answer I can come up with without having the book in front of me. I did read it. I don’t think they are looking for a specific detail in the story. I think it just means, “what does Jordan’s comment on Daisy’s voice (having an amorous tinge) say about Daisy as a character?” Maybe that will help you answer better. =]

Good luck. The Great Gatsby is a wonderful book.
