We tend to want to be with others of our kind. We wish to meet, talk, share experiences, and ideas. This attraction we have is more than sexual or reproductive in nature. Even people who have no intention of having sex will seek out others with similar interests. It is built into our psychie that we want to be with others. It is not a learned behavior. Many experiments have been done and even children who have been deprived of any real contact still crave to be with others like themselves.

There are many reasons why people say that humans are basically social animals. We examine different animals, for examples, those whose survival depends on taking others lives, such as tigers or lions; we learnt that their basic nature provides them with sharp fangs and claws. Other animals, such as deer, which are completely vegetarian, are gentler and have smaller teeth and no claws. From that point we human beings have a non-violent nature. Human beings are social animals. In order to survive we need companions. Without other human beings there is simply no possibility of surviving; that is a law of nature. Since I deeply believe that human beings are basically gentle by nature, I feel that we should not only maintain gentle, peaceful relations with our fellow human beings bur also that is very important to extend the same kind of attitude toward the natural environment.

There are traits that we share with animals, since we are part of the animal kingdom/Kingdom Animalia; however, to place us on the same level as “social animals” is just plain not true.

No other creature on earth has the traits that we do: complex/advanced communication skills, artistry, musical composition, scientific discovery and advancement, religious worship, government that goes beyond “the silverback defends the troop”, intellectual – not instinctive – understanding of our environment, travel that requires more than our own two feet, advanced societal rules…the list goes on and on.

Sorry, but human beings just plain don’t fit that mold. If you look only at biological makeup, we share traits with other animals – we have similar bodily systems, we feel pain and comfort, we have conflict – but that’s where it stops. Human beings are different from “animals” in thousands of different ways, both large and small.
