Add the integers and the fractions separately.

Integers: 5 + 4 = 9.

Fractions: 2/5 + 1/5 bothe have denominator 5, and you therefore add the numerators to get 3/5.

Answer 9 3/5.

To simplify the fractions you need to add, simply multiply the denominator (bottom number of the fraction) with the whole number and then add the numerator (top number in the fraction) to get your numbers, then add your numerators across and then with your answer divide by the denominator to get your mixed fraction.

1. 5 2/5 = (5 * 5 + 2) / 5

a. (5 * 5 + 2) / 5 = (25 + 2) / 5

b. (25 + 2) / 5 = 27/5 is your answer for the first fraction.

2. 4 1/5 = (5 * 4 + 1) / 5

a. (5 * 4 + 1) / 5 = (20 + 1) / 5

b. (20 + 1) / 5 = 21/5 your answer for the second fraction.

3. Now you need to add them across since they’ve got the same denominator.

a. 27/5 + 21/5 = (27 + 21)/5

b. (27 + 21)/5 = 48/5 which is the sum of the fractions.

Now we’ll simplify it by dividing 48 by 5 and using the biggest whole number that goes into it, which in this case is 9. Since 9 x 5 = 45 we subtract 45 from 48 and get 3, so we’re left with the following answer.

4. 48/5 = 9 3/5 Final answer.

Okay, this is really very simple and fairly easy since they give you a 5 in both fractions as the denominator. What I would suggest doing first is lining them up vertically (up and down).

(ex. 5 2/5

4 1/5)

It’s probably going to be easier if you do this on a piece of paper, because you can’t really do it and get a clear view on the computer.

First (going left to right) add up the 5 & 4 (ex. 5+4=9)

Next, add up the 2 & 1 (ex. 2+1=3)

So if you are doing this correctly the answer comes out 9 3/5 .

Now, I’m not sure if this is correct, because I haven’t done it for a couple years but I’m 90% sure.
