you were waiting for your freinds to turn up for your birthday party. when you heard the doorbell ring, you hurriedly open the door but two strangers walked in instead.

Situation, Complication, Resolution, Action applies here as much as it does to letter writing. Then give each of your characters in your little story a persona – expand them to be real people with personalities.
Perhaps you, Joe, the loner from Illinois, finally had an opportunity for a party in your new town in Washington. You had invited one person and five more friends had decided to come. You were going to …. what? (Well I’m not going to write it all)
It was 8. But it was a windy/dark night and while Pete and Jacquie should be here, the sounds at the door were just the wind banging …. OK … blah blah from there.
Finally a louder bang … “yo – Pete!” you yell. “Yeah sure is “came the reply. “It’s open dude”. But it wasn’t Pete blah blah … and they want your car … blah blah. But you don’t have a car dude. Well you’d better get me a car before I slice you .. blah blah blah
You’re torn by not wanting to dump your friends but wanting a way out. They’ll be here soon. You send an SMS to stay away but you get sprung.
You’re about to have your head beaten in when you discover your new friends have taken the hint and called the police.
It’s a stand off … what happens. Do you get shot? Are you the hero, or a prat for telling your friends to stay away? Or are there mixed feelings?
Remember it’s emotions that make a story good. So how do you feel, how do your friends feel. How desperate were the intruders?
