In the late 18th century the role of women in society was very different from what it is today, after the huge success of the women’s liberation movement in the 20th century and with feminism now a dynamic force in society. In 18th-century England women were excluded from most fields of society, expected to keep house and keep quiet. They could, for example, not visit a newcomer in town (like Mr. Bingley in “Pride and Prejudice”) until the male person in the house had paid the newcomer a visit first. Women couldn’t be self-sufficient without the aid of a man – money and men went hand in hand, with marriage being something like a financial transaction rather than a matter of love. Women were under enormous pressure to make a ‘good’ marriage. Writer Jane Austen considered loveless marriage a terrible idea (she herself stayed single all her life) and rather approved of an equal match in various respects, such as wealth, social status, love and character. “Pride and Prejudice” clearly shows how important wealth, social status, chastity and physical attractiveness were for an unmarried woman in those days.

Well..id go for PRIDE and PREJUDICE.I mean..you can start talking about the pride that some people have,and that will relate to Mr. Darcy..You can also talk about the prejudicies that some of us have..and through all these thing you can introduce the beggining of the story..Hope it helps!

About the women’s need to be married and how their age and the man’s wealth meant so much to the family. . . I loved that book 🙂 Austen is so witty.

Although Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy were obviously in love with one another they were pressured by people around them to be something different then they wanteed to be and to do things they didnt want to do.ELizabeth was head over heels in love with Darcy but was pressured by her mother and father to marry MR.Collins so that her parents and family will have a house to live in incase Mr.Bennet died.Also Mr>darcy was full of pride and was ashamed in teh beginning of the book of falling in love with a girl who was lower in society than him but ultimately forgot his pride and proposed to elizabeth.Mr.Bingley was also in love with Elizabeth’s sister Jane but was pressured y his sister to break up with her because of who her family was but ultimately married her.Almost all the characters in the book were pressured by other characters into doing other thigns instead of following their own hearts and dreams but ultimatley made their own decisions.HOpe this helped or gave you something to start off with
