How do I convince my teacher/counselor??
I failed our school’s regular mathematics course this year due to extenuating circumstances(our family had both financial and social problems that inhibited my performance)but I retook it this summer and got an A. I can now cope with my family’s problems and feel confident that I can do the work that the honors class demands. How can I convince my teacher/counselor that I can do the work?I feel that I need to do this course because I want to pursue endeavors that would require knowledge of that type of math.

i had the same situation. talk to your councelor and tell her the truth and tell her what was going on. also tell her that you feel confident with yourself about taking an honors class. you can even write up a contract saying like if you dont do well the first quarter, then you’ll be willing to move back into the regular class. good luck and never give up!

explain the situation to your counselor. use a little more detail than you did in the question – explain how you cope with the family challenges and explain why you feel you can make it in the honors class. don’t forget to tell the counselor how the honors class fits into your future goals. have your mom and/or dad write a letter to the school asking them to enroll you in this honor’s course. if mom and dad hesitate convince them you will speak up if the work is too hard or too much.

I would bring your transcript and perhaps a written recommendation from the summer school teacher, and say exactly what you said in your question.
I know that in my area, a student can ask to take an advanced course, and, unless the class is full, the request is granted on a conditional basis.
If the counselor or teacher says no, then perhaps an adult needs to speak to a school administrator on your behalf.
I think that anyone who wants to try an advanced course ought to be given the opportunity to do so.

Be honest with your counselor. Tell her what’s been going on in your life and try to make her understand why it is that you failed your math course. Ask her if you can take a test to get into the honors class. Try as hard as you can to get into that class. And if that doesn’t fall through this year, try again next year.
