What good activity could we give to a special class that would make the children happy?
Our class has planned to do an outreach program for the special class that we will visit, but we still haven’t decided yet how to do it, one batch videotaped their activity and did a program like some of them sing for the special kids, others since their busy they just decided to ask the teacher of the special class to ask them their wish or what they want to have and bought these wishes for them like a doll or a small guitar. We would like to make it unique something that hasn’t been done yet. Anyone has ideas? Thanks in advance. =)

So as not to defer greately from a classroom setting (many special education children don’t like a wide change in routine), have a class period on one topic where your class plays roles as “teacher’s aides.” Your kids will love being “experts” on the topic, and the special education kids will enjoy working with other kids. Ask the special class to come up with a topic (or list of topics) they’d like to learn more about, and then have your class pick a topic and reasearch it (this involves your kids more; they’ll have to know a lot about the topic and really plan for a class!) You could plan several different activities (games, crafts, experiments, etc) and then break up each class into groups (the “experts” and the special kids) or you could do one group activity (better for broad topics). Either way, and with whatever you decide to do, have fun and let your kids lead!
Some sample topics:
Safety, under the sea, numbers/counting, music, seasons/weather, months of the year, Disney characters (great for older kids who can recognize them), recycling/”everyday” crafts, colors/shapes, the alphabet…
Hope this helps!

Cynthia is totally right on this one. I have taught special education students as well. In general, they are very hands on and like to touch things. Doing a simple craft or art project would be nice. But, keep in mind it needs to be very simple and one step at a time. Special Ed kids have a great amount of difficulty doing more than one step at a time. There are some easy kinds of projects on www.enchantedlearning.com, any category has tons of crafts/art projects in it. Good luck and have fun!

I don’t know a lot about the group you are visiting, but most special classes like to do hands on projects… something they can take home. Maybe something with clay or a nice collage or diorama in a shoebox related to a story you have read to them. The kids could work on the projects together. Then the focus is on the project and not so much: we are different. Its nice of you to think of this. have fun!

It really depends on the functioning level of the special ed children. You may have each student partner with a special needs child and do simple games….such as rolling a ball, reading them a story for lower level children. The higher functioning children may play shuffelboard, or shooting baskets. As a special ed instructor, my sister has found that something as simple as cooking seems to fascinate them….such as stirring up brownies, making kool aid…etc…simple things.

Do something in which the students are active. Special needs students really enjoy that. ex. I taught a lesson in a life skills support class in which I read a story about a thunderstorm in which the students made sounds and hand motions. I got one child to respond who doesn’t normally respond. 😀

FABRICS!! A basket of material in bright patters and colours, and varied textures. Cut into a range of sizes from 2in to 2 ft squares. great for col large with little ones Or sewing bags and cushion covers with the more accomplished Doesn’t need to be new, just clean. then add kids glue and see what you get!

give them a “active fun” party! that is where u execize and have fun at the same time! if any r handicapped, play a board game with them. A good idea for the active fun party is a wiggles video to dance to! hope that helps!

The mere fact that you are asking makes you special.
