Should I start planning what to do after high school already?(college?

I’m going into 11th grade and most other students are already set on what they want to become because they are good at math or music or something like that. Their goals are still set on becoming doctors and lawyers.

I on the other hand have no idea what I want to do in 2 years because my grades are mid 90s in every subject.

Should I just plan a career/major to do with my favorite subject or have an undecided major while in college and worry about work later?

Believe it or not, many of your friends that are so sure of what they want to do will change their minds at least once (usually about the time they hit biochemistry or realize how much lawyers work). I’m 31, moving on to my second career and I’m not even using my college degree. DON’T WORRY. You’re still young and you’ve got lots of time to figure things out.

If you do want to go to college, do what one of the other posters suggested. Go to school and start undeclared. You should start researching and checking out colleges soon though.

If you don’t want to go to college now, DON’T WORRY! In retrospect I wish I had taken time off before going to school. Travel, look for work, join americorps or the peace corps. There are plenty of things that you can do other than go to college. Just find something you enjoy, that you are good at, and work at it. It’ll all come together.

Just reading what you said, I would definitely go in undecided. Most college students change their majors at least once anyway, whether they go in undecided or not — I know I did. I think the average is 2-3 times (changing majors), but the later you do it, the longer you’re going to be in school — as in, changing after you’ve already had some major-specific classes. Also, really don’t plan on graduating in 4 years — the only way that’s (usually) possible is if you live at home throughout and don’t work at all. You could be a “highly motivated” person and do it anyway, but be careful not to burn yourself out. Life happens, it’s more difficult to plan a life than you might think. Well known quote, I’m not sure where from — “The easiest way to make God laugh is to tell Him your plans.” Good luck, and remember to relax a little bit along the way — high school and college (to a point) are supposed to be fun. You’ve got the rest of your life to work afterwards.

As somebody pointed out before, don’t let the fact that other people in your class think they know what they’re going to do after college bother you. I bet at your 15 year reunion, most of the kids who were talking about becoming doctors and lawyers in 10th grade ended up doing something else. I’ll use myself as an example of how weird college can be. In high school I wanted to be a businessman, so naturally I majored in business. After one semester of economics and a business administration class, I realized it wasn’t for me. So I changed my major to journalism, I enjoyed writing and was good at it so it seemed like a natural fit. Again, that lasted one semester. Eventually I settled on history, it was always my favorite subject in school and I enjoyed college tremendously from then on. After I graduated I accepted a job as a loan officer for a mortgage company–I didn’t need that degree in finance after all.

My best advice to you is to take your time, explore, take classes that you think sound interesting. You’ll leave with a well rounded education and you may discover your passion just from an elective you took to fill out the schedule. Good luck to you, you’re entering a very exciting time in your life- don’t spend too much time worrying about your career after college, that will take care of itself. Just make the most of your time in school and your possibilities will be endless.

Pretty much your first two years in college are just general education classes (like math, english, science) so if you don’t exactly know what you want to do then just go in as undeclared. After taking a few classes you may figure out what you really want to major in.

Don’t worry about it now, I didn’t know what I wanted to do until senior year. You can go to any school (University, community) and get your basic classes out of the way first. Somewhere along the way you may discover what you want to do, or think about what you enjoy doing. You want to choose a career that you will enjoy, don’t pick one for the money.

I don’t know what country you’re from, but mid 90s in the US is a good grade.

You don’t need to know things like “doctor” or “lawyer” but if you want to go to college right after you graduate, you should start looking at them and taking all the necessary tests… soon.

I think its too early to decide..Just be clear about what you def dont want to do….. and put in your best. Career would fall in place later.
