Somewhere along the way, I read that five years after graduate, about 30% of college graduates end-up working in a job related to their major. My understanding is that this stat is the average across disciplines, but that it’s much higher in some (e.g., business – which is just vague enough to make sense, and education) and much lower in others (e.g., music, performing arts – both for obvious reasons).

Anyway, a lot really depends on how you define the relationship between your job and your major field. For instance, is some one who works as a hospital administrator who majored in biology working in their field or out of their field? I’d say “in,” but then again… we don’t teach about the business skills that they need in bio classes, so I could also see the logic in saying that that person is “out” of their field.
