I think that any respectable university would have a decent psychology program. (It’s when you get into business or the sciences that you might want to shop around. It’s not really worth it to go out of state for a degree in a liberal arts field.) But, I’m a psych major and honestly, I don’t feel like I learned a damn thing about psychology. Every course I took was completely different (human mating, motivation, fantasy and reality) and so all I remember is random, useless facts. Plus, you’ll definitely need a master’s or phd to work in that field. So, I’m actually also pre-vet too. Because, I realized I don’t want to listen to people’s problems or do research on pointless topics!

Most universities have pretty decent undergraduate psychology programs. However, if you are seriously interested in the field then you will want to go to a school that has an active research psychology department. Because it’s almost impossible to do any substantial work with only an undergrad. degree in psychology (it’s essentially to have at least a masters degree to work independently), a lot of psychology students who want to work in the field end up going to graduate school for either social work or psychology. Masters programs in psychology (MA/MS in clinical or counseling psychology) can allow a person to work as a therapist and are relatively easy to get into as long as a person has decent grades and GRE scores. Because some schools do require undergraduate research experience, it’s important to go to a university that has faculty doing research in the field — therefore, it’s important to look at the schools you’re interested in to see if their faculty are doing research in an area in which you’re interested. If you’re interested in a PhD in psychology, be prepared for a fight – it’s harder to get into clinical psychology PhD programs than it is to get into medical school, so in that case it’s *really* important to go to a school that has an active research faculty or to be prepared to get independent research experience at a hospital or mental health clinic that does clinical trials of some sort.
