It’s called a “euphemism,” a substitute for foul language.
Have you noticed that the word “sh*t” has actually lost it’s meaning?
“Oh, sh*t! I stepped in some dog poop!”

poop refers to a particular deck of a ship, and is therefore a substitute for an expletive
