‘Country hick’ is a put down. It means that one is slow, backward and conservative in values, manners, and behaviour. In country areas it is also used to mean someone who is wealthy and a snob.
It comes from the term ‘Old Hickory’, a nickname for Andrew Jackson. It implied he was tough and enduring like the old hickory tree. He was admired by rural and mountain people. It later became used as a derogatory term for country people by those in the city.
