“Hanged” or “hung”?

Which is more appropriate?

I think hung sounds better in any context but new insight is appreciated.

Thank you

According to Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hung)

Usage Note: Hanged, as a past tense and a past participle of hang, is used in the sense of “to put to death by hanging,” as in Frontier courts hanged many a prisoner after a summary trial. A majority of the Usage Panel objects to hung used in this sense. In all other senses of the word, hung is the preferred form as past tense and past participle, as in I hung my child’s picture above my desk.

Hung does sound better, but in my dictionary it says hanged is the preferred past tense and present tense, so properly hanged is preferred by Webster. But I agree hung sounds better.

It depends on the context – a person executed for commission of a capital crime is “hanged”, in all other instances, e.g. a picture on the wall, the term is “hung”.

If you are referring to a person who was killed by hanging in the past you must say “hanged.” Hanged may sound improper, but it is not proper English to say “he was hung.” If you are referring to hanging your clothes on the line in the past you must say “hung.” This is just another weird rule of the crazy language we call English.

If you are speaking of a person who has been executed by hanging, you say –Joe Blow was hanged from the hanging tree.

If you are speaking on and object that you suspended you say you hung it. – “I hung Joe’s picture on the wall after he was hanged.”

Hanged is the propper grammer.

I personally think hung sounds better, but thats just because most of us are used to people saying hung, rather than hanged.

My Junior AP English class had a debate about this with our teacher when we watched a movie where a guy was hanged in it. Turns out hanged is proper.

Just depends on what you like the most and what situation you are using it in. Hanged to sound more formal, hung for more casual mostly.

If you’re talking about a person, “hanged” is correct, as in Saddam Hussein was hanged.
