why these children are so exam oriented?

The problem is the emphasis everyone (schools, parents, the world) puts on grades. When you apply for college or jobs, what’s the thing they look at? The grades supposedly tell how much the student knows. Actually, grades tell nothing more than how much a student can cram in their brain the night before a test and then forget it the next day. Universities and everyone really need to come up with a better way to evaluate students rather than give tests, give a grade, and then say ‘ha i just screwed you with those trick questions. Good luck in life.’

I think we are trained from a young age to care about exams. In first grade we were taught if you know such and such material you’ll get an A and a sticker. Then it continues (not the sticker part) throughout the school years. Kids weren’t taught to learn for the sake of learning. They are taught to absorb information to do well on tests.

I heard of some schools where they don’t give grades. The students just learn. I wonder if they’re better off.

In recent years NCLB, has forced schools to initiate more testing. In order for schools to recieve adequate funding test scores need to be kept up.

The students are taught to test. No one ever told them to thirst for knowledge they told them to study, review, get adequate sleep, and a good breakfast.

I can see it at my school too. We have an enormous amount of the student body the smokes weed and drinks, but we let it slide as long as test scores are up. Our SADD program was cancelled last year because we couldn’t find enough participate. But how many of the faculty actually cared? One. The rest were probably all off preping their students for tests.

I was in a small religious college and it shocked me to see the amount of cheating and backstabbing. Several times I saw students come in before our exam, and give the answer key. Not the answers, but the scoring key: T, T, F… A, C, B. I realize they encourage the students to form study groups, but this was just mostly getting ready for cutting throats in the competitive medical field.

They have been tought to believe and think marks and rote memorization is the only way to the top..sad!
