Why learning fraction is so hard for the students?

I am a middle school Math teacher. My students are have such hard time on learning fractions that they basically gave up on the subject. I came from Taiwan. I remember fraction was hard but not impossible. My Mexican or ESL kids don’t have problem with fraction either. It really bothers me that American kids are struggling with fractions because we are supposed to be the one of the most advance countries in the world. What went wrong?

there is nothing hard about it they have to want to learn it first then it goes from there. you have to find a way to encourage them .

Look. I always had a hard time in math & thank fully my teacher didn’t give up on me or blame the overall education.

No offence but you really have to find a way to reach these kids.

I would suggest starting slower/ start with more creative ways.

Take the kids that “get it” and stick them on one side of the room, spend all of 5 minutes with them, give them work for the class.

Take rest of the class, put kids in a circle with their desks.

Suggest that they take 10 items (pick up some buttons or power chips, etc).

1/10, 2/10, 3/10, 4/10, 5/10, 6/10, 7/10, 8/10,9/10, 10/10

That is easy to understand when you show them what you are talking about–actually take your time to go through the process of taking 1 token out & say I have 1/10.

Take 2 tokens, say I have 2/10.

They may look bored–like wtf? But seriously try using baking as a reason to show these kids why you need fractions–apply to those kids a way to use in in practical ways.

IF that doesn’t work–USE MONEY!! They would understand that from a $100, that $10/100 is 1/10

I mean keep trying to find a way because I’m sure that somehow you would find kids in those other countries who would not “get it” either!

Seriously I always found that the teachers felt that they were smarter because they were able to teach the smart kids–but really from a person who always had a hard time learning–a teacher is only smart if he/she can find a way to teach the kids who don’t catch on right away either!

This sometimes works: try changing the line that seperates the numerator from the denominator to a slant like so: 3/4. That opens a different part of the brain when presented like that.

have you tried breaking it up for them? if so i suggest that you bring a pie in school and cut fractions. I know so taiwanese people and you are very nice. I know you will think of something.

Fractions are hard because they are. I know because I’m 14.
