Because Dr. Charles R. Drew was a brilliant African-American physician, famous for his pioneering work in blood preservation. His study and techniques in the preservation of blood and plasma (Red Cross blood bank) were vital to saving lives during World War II. He was an inspirational man whose short life (he was killed in auto accident at age 46) was full of achievements, learning and sharing his knowledge to benefit mankind. Among his many honors and accolades, he was designated a ‘Great American’ and a postal stamp in his honor was issued in 1981.
