Why is it that?

Anytime I ask someone from the Uk what a term means or what a word they use means, they take offense, and think you are knocking down thier Queen! Just like the Earl Grey commercial. Lighten up people! All I need to know is what those words mean. Like when I say “canned tuna” you say “tinned tuna. We both speak english, but the words are still diffrent. And if we must know, I beg of you to be tolerent. We can get along! Thankyou!

Fact is languages are ever changing universes and they die if they don’t. Almost anybody from a certain country wants to say that they speak the best English, or Spanish and so on……. England is the oldest English speaking country so they would feel entitled to say their english, as it is it’s birthplace, it’s the best and the rest of the world can’t even spell. For the reason I said before, they might not be correct.

I had a Brit jump me for the American usage of “check”. She said “I never know if you mean verify or an instrument of payment”. I assured her that context made it perfectly clear. We really do have more important thing to worry about.
