They are correct…it was a promotional campaign devised in the 1970’s by the NY Dept of Tourism. The term was coined by a black horseman in New Orleans…it was every horseman’s dream to ride the best Thoroughbred…”the Big Apple.” What that has to do with NYC is beyond me as NYC was not a great place in the 1970’s…there was too much crime in that decade.
