Why is a grade of 65 considered passing a test?
Why not 60, or 50, or 75 for that matter?

It’s an arbitrary number, however, a standard must be in place to have something to judge success by. 65 is considered passing by most standards, but feel free to shoot for whatever standard you like. If you think 90 or better is possible, why not go for it?

Well, 65 seems like a pretty good number for a passing grade. It’s slightly over 50%,, which is right in the middle, neither passing nor failing. 65 is not as high as 75%, or 3/4 of a grade. It’s like a grade at equilibrium, but school officials know better.

I have no idea. When I was teaching, 70 was passing. Period. But I taught in a technical professional area of academics. I wouldn’t want to see a graduate from that area pass at less than 70% knowledge of the subject.

Actually, 65 is not always passing–it varies by school. I don’t know why schools pick such measures.
