Why does this happen?

I’m going to be a junior in high school this year and I have a major problem with being shy. I tend to panic in class whenever a teacher calls on me to answer a question. Even if it’s the simplest question in the world where I know the answer, I always blank out and forget what I wanted to say. And after that happens I always feel very embarressed and want to cry. What can I do to prevent this from happening? And shouldn’t teachers stop calling on me if they know that I panic everytime they call on me?

Maybe don’t wait for the teacher to call on you. When he or she asks something, develop some kind of simple answer in your mind–don’t go for exact wording, you’ll probably just get tongue-tied–but the raise your hand and just throw out whatever you can. Even if you don’t know the entire answer, the teacher can take what you’ve said and keep asking…. Every now and then try to be the one who volunteers to answer, a teacher will typically appreiciate that. I know when I was in high school that teachers get a little frustrated when no one answers, so I kind of had a tendency to give answers whenever there was a pause. I was fairly shy (I didn’t forget the answer, but could never word it properly) and now I’m the type to raise my hand a lot and ask questions to teachers, and that actually does a lot of good.

It really is something that you’ll have to work on. It’s possible that answering things on the spot will never come naturally, but take a deep breath, and try to say something.

Yeah that happened to me but maybe what you need is to sit near a friend I mean I have that problem and even now that I am going into my senior year I still feel weird answering something infront of the class. What really helped me is knowing that teenagers usually forget things after 2 days, so dont worry try step by step and you’ll see by the end of the school year you’ll be able to answer it p.s I felt like that in my English class, so I just choose to sleep in the class but towards the end of the year I just started answering things.

I had the same problem all the way up to grade 11 World History. We did these group disscussion and it really helped getting used to talking to everyone. I know when a teacher calls on you and everyone stares at you until you answer-it’s nerve racking. But just focus ont he question and say it directly to the teacher untill you are comfortable talking to the class.
