why do we say Take a crap, you actually leave one?
i mean if you took a turd from a bathroom that would be nasty, imagine trying to take a piss. leave a crap makes more sense

It is used likde a short term classified event. (well hopefully short term.). These are usually very common events.
Like taking a:
nap
shower
break
piss
vacation
If you want to look at it literally you could in which that case you physically take a turd from a pile of turds.
