People do not know much about education, that’s why. I am in NYC, and the ccs here are pretty good. It depends on the school, the area, there are so many factors involved in this decision and it is very personal. Maybe you are not ready to leave home right now, and that’s fine.

You’ve chosen to save money, and do this the way you need to. If you do well, there’s no reason you can’t go on to a 4 year, and you’ll have the same degree and be in less debt.

One more thing- I went to an Ivy for undergrad- it was the most disgusting city in the world, and I’m from NYC and was poor! I have worked in higher ed, and in fact, my friend went to tech school and makes what I do, except he is a super of a building and doesn’t pay RENT! Also, he doesn’t speak English, while I speak English AND Spanish! (We’re Puerto Rican, so it”s common, you don’t have to speak English to make $$$ here) You have to make decisions for yourself, money isn’t everything, he’s a mechanic by trade (and clearly could have been an engineer) and I want to help people, that’s why I settle for less $. These decisions are so much more complicated than just “I went to XYZ school,” so don’t let people hurt your feelings as long as you are sure made the right choice for yourself.

Most of the community colleges cannot afford to pay their professors the same scale as the large universities, therefore they don’t attract some of the better teachers. That’s not to say that some of the community college teachers aren’t great–some are. I spent two years at a community college and two years at a large university. I found the CC professors more accessible; they had more time to answer questions and help students–so take advantage of that.

you can go to a community college and then transfer to the college you want. while at the community college you will be saving a lot of money. I wished I had gone to a community college in the beginning, Know i have a least 20,000 + in loans to pay back. I went to a Private College for women. Now I’m at a community college trying to get in to a cal state. make sure you apply for Financial aid,and the EOPS office

I don’t know either. You can get a really good and affordable education at a two year college and it can transfer to a 4 year college afterwards. The benefit is that you save thousands of dollars in tuition by going to the community college for the first two years of your education.

Because people have egos. We all want to think we are better than someone else, whether you admit to this fact or not, and college elitism is one of the games we play. Anyone who gets into a more-selective college can look down on someone who gets into a less-selective college (or a college that admits everyone and isn’t selective at all) as a way of increasing their self-confidence. People are naturally insecure, don’t let it bother you too much.
