Who should i get a recommendation from?

I am applying to an MBA program and currently working at a law firm. I originally thought my boss(a junior partner) would be a good reference, but I think he is a little too negatively inclined and might show more of my faults then give an excellent review of my abilities. On the other hand there is an associate close in age who I can relate to as far as schooling goes and think she would be a good candidate for writing my recommendation. I would ask the senior partner, but I’m afraid he may just go to the junior partner and have him write it or give ideas and that just wont go well, so what should i do, who should I ask? the MBA program asks for a current employer, so I have to choose.

I would go with the Associate Partner. If they are above you, then they are technically your “superior” too (speaking in the frame of employment). If they can’t or you think otherwise, go to the Senior Partner and ask him specifically. 99% of the time, they will do it themselves b/c it gets their name some recognition and they can attach their support to your name. Good luck!

Buck up and ask your boss. It shows that you are motivated in improving yourself and he may see you as an asset to the company and may encourage/help you get what you want.

If he doesn’t, well, it doesn’t hurt to try.

Good luck.
