Lateral thinking is a term coined by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist, physician and writer. It first appeared in the title of his book The Use of Lateral Thinking, published in 1967. De Bono defines lateral thinking as methods of thinking concerned with changing concepts and perception. Lateral thinking is about reasoning that is not immediately obvious and about ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic.

Edward De Bono. he is known as the father or inventor of lateral thinking. It means to see a situation or problem from a completely different or unthought of angle. EG. There was a problem in Germany of a company repeatedly discharging polluted waste through their outlet pipe into the river. The government was at a loss as how to tackle this problem. De Bono’s solution was that the company was made to change their outlet pipe to a point on the river above their water inlet pipe. Needless to say the company then cleaned up their act so they wouldnt be taking in polluted water. Neat eh!! De Bono has written quite a few books, check them at your local library.
