“HIS” is the possessive form of he (used as an attributive or predicative adjective):
When using “his” you are using a possessive form, indicating ownership. Although what he said does belong to him, you are actually referring to the person and what was said, which is why “him” is grammatically correct.
i remember him saying that makes sense if that is the end of the sentence. the only way his would work is in something like
“i remember his saying, ‘that wont work'”
his means you’re referring to something he specifically said.
“I remember his saying that.”
“I remember his being there.”
“I remember him well.”
