Which is a better path?

I’m a new college student and I want to teach English as a Second Language. Tambien es q yo hablo espanol y estudio espanol como mi primer sujeto en la universidad. I study Spanish as my undergrad major. I figure getting a bachelors in Spanish will demonstrate my proficiency in the “second” language and then follow up with a masters in ESL/TESOL. Is this a good idea, or do I need a degree in English first?

Knowing Spanish is irrelevant in being able to teach English as a Second Language. ESL teachers are responsible for teaching English, not learning Spanish. This, in fact, is what an ESL teacher has told me.

You do not need to be proficient in Spanish to be an ESL teacher. Not all people who are learning English as a Second Language speak Spanish as their first language. How would being proficient in Spanish help you with your Asian, Arabic, and European students? However, if you are studying Spanish, you should consider becoming a bilingual teacher. Bilingual teachers are already in high demand, and this is not going to change anytime in the near future, in fact, quite the opposite.

Also, in order to become a teacher, you need to major in education, not Spanish or English. Go talk to some people in the Education Department at your college about your goals, and they will help you find the right major.

Buenos suertes!
