Which grad schools should I visit?

I’m going to be applying to MFA programs in creative writing in about a year’s time. How do I go about formally visiting the campuses and the programs? Do I just give the faculty of that program a ring and show up? What’s the etiquette?

Give a ring and show up is pretty much the etiquette. Call the graduate coordinator or the graduate advisor. You can usually contact them via email too. Let them know when you plan to visit, and ask if there will be any faculty members or current graduate students to speak with you. Sometimes they will refer you to a graduate open house day if the department holds one, but they are usually willing to accommodate any time of the year.

When you get there make sure that you have some specific questions to ask faculty if you meet with them.

Good luck.
