I know I could look it up, but that would take the fun out of guessing. My guess would be the shape of excitement is somewhat similar to a bovine horn. The sailors story is funny.

Sailors said it, eh? Well that explains everything! Sailors are bound to say anything.
They probably said it to each other when out to sea for months and months, and no women were aboard ship to satisfy their primal needs.
One sailor said to the other, “You horny?”
The sailor answered, I’m horny!” He turned to the next sailor and said, “Horny?” The sailor replied, “Horny indeed!’ That sailor looked at the first sailor and said, “Yep, we’re all very horny!” Then they just stood around the deck and looked blankly at each other.

um. maybe it’s because an erection looks like an animal horn. when you are in need of sex, you give way to your animalistic lust.
