The expression is Pinko Commie. It is from the Cold War era when communists were the “bad guys.” It is roughly equivalent to the current epithet of “terrorist.”

Commie is short for Communist. The USSR and Chinese flags were red, so a pinko was someone who had a red tinge. Because pink was considered a female color, it implied that Communists were weak and cowardly (yes, that is sexist, but sexism was acceptable at the time).

In addition to what the others said, this reeks of McCarthyism, and also the fact gay people were automatically considered radicals because their homosexuality somehow was completely against “Americanism”. Therefore, to make them look bad, they were lumped with Communists seeking to create a conspiracy to overthrow truth, justice and the American way and the rest of that cornball 1950s bullshit.

A communist in the USA who is referred to as having less than perfect (red) communist ideals? Perhaps of a liberal persuasion in reality rather than an actual communist.
