when you write a paper..?

on a book… do you always have to underline the name of book or can you put it in ” ” quotes? my teacher said.. u can do either but i want to make sure that.. that is right?

Underlining is unfashionable and you should really use it only in handwritten papers. In these days of word processing, book titles are usually set in italic. If you must use quotes, use single quotes except when you have a quote within a quote. (Look it up in Fowler if you don’t believe me.)

For example,

I’ve been studying Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

I read ‘Robinson Crusoe,’ and I really hated it.

Someone tells Caesar, ‘The soothsayer says, “Beware the ides of March,” so watch your back.’

And if you use this last example, please remember that ‘ides’ has two syllables: eye-dees. It does not rhyme with ‘slides.’
